Housing Choice Voucher Use may Fall by 125,000-185,000 households if Sequestration Continues – November 12, 2013

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) has issued a new report on the impact of sequestration to date and consequences if sequestration continues.  It reports that state and local housing agencies are currently facing deep shortfalls in funding to renew Housing Choice Vouchers for the 2.1 million low-income families using them.  If Congress does not cancel sequestration as part of an agreement to fund the government beyond January 14, these shortfalls will continue with harsher consequences for low-income families.  CBPP projects a reduction of between 125,000 and 185,000 low-income families using housing vouchers by the end of 2014, compared to December 2012, including 2,100-3,300 households in Massachusetts.  CBPP has also posted updated fact sheets on 2012 voucher utilization by state and by housing authority.  Click here to link to the MA data.
