Massachusetts Reports Strongest Multi-Family Housing Permit Activity in 7 Years - January 31, 2014

The Office of Housing and Economic Development reported on January 30 that permits were pulled for 7,601 multi-family units (units in buildings with two or more units) in 2013, reflecting the demand that led the Governor to announce a statewide housing production goal of 10,000 multi-family units per year through 2020.  As detailed in the announcement, the number of multi-family units permitted in 2013 is the highest reported since 2006.  It represents a 50% increase from 2012 (5,019 units) and is more than triple the figure for 2009 (2,346) .  The announcement notes the importance of multi-family housing production to the long term health of the state's economy.
