Interim Real Estate Project Manager
Temporary · Part-Time · Hybrid | Danvers, MA
$46–$55/hour DOE · ~16 hrs/week · ~5 months
Deep Expertise. Flexible Schedule. Real Impact.
You have spent years navigating the complexities of real estate development in Massachusetts. You are comfortable in front of a board of appeals, you can read a pro forma at a glance, and you understand what it actually takes to move a project from site control to permit approval.
Now imagine putting all of that expertise toward something that has nothing to do with profit margins — and everything to do with families.
Essex County Habitat for Humanity is seeking an experienced real estate development professional who wants part-time, flexible work with real impact. Whether you are balancing other commitments, prioritizing flexibility, or simply ready to put your skills toward a mission you believe in, this role is built for someone who brings serious experience and values the freedom that part-time work provides. About 16 hours a week for five months — but the impact is lasting.
About Essex County Habitat
For 40 years, Essex County Habitat for Humanity has been building and improving affordable homes across 32 cities and towns in Northeastern Massachusetts. We are an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, and our mission is simple: a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We make that happen one home at a time, alongside the families who will live in them.
The Role
We are in a period of leadership transition and need an experienced real estate development professional to step in as Interim Real Estate Project Manager and keep our project pipeline moving. You will work directly with our Executive Director, Construction Director, Finance Director, and volunteer Site Acquisition Committee.
This is hands-on work. We need someone who can hit the ground running.
Site Selection & Acquisition
- Evaluate RFPs, land donor prospects, and potential acquisitions; complete due diligence
- Oversee environmental assessments, zoning analysis, utility, and floodplain reviews
- Manage real estate transfers and coordinate legal documents (LDAs, P&S agreements, condo docs)
- Serve as staff liaison to the Site Acquisition Committee
- Cultivate relationships with land donors, municipal partners, and the development community
Pre-Development Planning
- Coordinate professional services: engineering, environmental, architectural, legal
- Build and maintain project pro formas, including acquisition costs, soft costs, and financing
- Lead permitting and entitlement negotiations with municipal and state agencies
- Manage the Subsidized Housing Inventory (SHI) process and Chapter 40B compliance
- Evaluate emerging construction methodologies (modular, 3D-printed) for feasibility
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build relationships with local officials, housing authorities, and community leaders
- Advocate for affordable housing at the state and local level
- Represent Essex County Habitat professionally in all external engagements
What You Bring
If the following describes your background, we would love to hear from you:
- 5+ years in real estate development, affordable housing, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated experience with site acquisition, land conveyance, and condominium development
- Fluency with affordable homeownership pro formas, public subsidy programs, and financing structures
- Working knowledge of Massachusetts affordable housing law, Chapter 40B, and the SHI process
- Familiarity with EOHLC programs and requirements
- The ability to step into an active project pipeline with minimal transition time
- Strong project management and communication skills — written and verbal
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license and reliable vehicle
Why This, Why Now
This is not a full-time commitment, and it is not forever. It is five months of meaningful work doing what you already know how to do — but this time, the beneficiaries are families who will spend decades in the homes you help bring to life.
You will have flexibility in how and where you work, a collaborative team that will value your experience, and the satisfaction of knowing your expertise is going toward something that matters.
