PRIMARY JOB FUNCTION

Reporting to the President and CEO and serving as an integral member of the HPN executive leadership team (E Team), the Executive Vice President, Chief of Staff (EVP) serves as a key advisor and strategic partner to the President and CEO providing support in managing critical operations and achieving the organization's strategic objectives. The EVP manages the operation and integration of the E Team and senior leadership team (SLT). Additionally, the EVP oversees fundraising, communications, governance, people and culture, and key functions within the chief executive office. This role requires an individual who can effectively navigate intricate organizational challenges, drive cross-functional collaboration, and ensure alignment with HPN's mission and vision. The direct reports to this EVP, Chief of Staff include the VP of Philanthropy and Communications, VP of People and Culture, and the Senior Executive Associate and Board Liaison. 

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the office of the President and CEO; serve as a thought partner and advisor to the President and CEO; represent the President and CEO at select internal meetings; and anticipate needs and proactively address opportunities and challenges to ensure smooth operations and enable effective executive leadership
  • Develop and manage the budgets of the chief executive office and all functional areas reporting up to this EVP position with focus on costs, efficiencies, annual business planning and budgeting process, streamlining resources and maximizing budget impact 
  • Provide the necessary facilitation and continuity, in partnership with their EVP colleagues, that allows the President and CEO to effectively perform her duties, especially those focused on key strategic, external relationships, public policy, and communications, while remaining connected to and aware of key organizational directions, decisions, and issues 
  • Plan and facilitate Executive Team (E Team) and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) meetings, retreats and planning sessions, aligning operations, activities and priorities; and develop and maintain a strong understanding of the organization and effective working relationships with executive and senior management team
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of HPN’s Strategic Framework. Lead the alignment of the Strategic Framework towards HPN’s long-term success. In furtherance of the Strategic Framework, oversee (with support) the development of operations-level workplans, featuring performance targets and timelines, and reporting on the progress to the E Team, SLT, and the Board of Directors 
  • Understand the key initiatives and workflows of the President and CEO and drive progress and results in these areas by working with team leaders and staff to develop annual workplan priorities, track performance, and resolve performance issues or other challenges
  • Participate as a key member of HPN’s executive team to devise strategy, set and drive culture and change (as needed)
  • Drive collaboration and strategic alignment across teams to ensure cohesive decision-making and alignment with organizational objectives while maximizing HPN’s short, medium and long-term profitability/sustainability
  • Facilitate clear internal and interdepartmental communications by managing key recurring meetings of the executive team, senior leadership team, and general staff, and maintaining internal communication vehicles (newsletters, lunch speakers, corporate intranet site); maintain a positive relationship with all staff to ensure excellent internal customer service
  • In partnership with the VP, Philanthropy & Communications, develop and implement HPN’s internal and external communication strategy and provide support to the President and CEO in the development and implementation of her communications and external relations strategy. 
  • In partnership with the VP, Philanthropy & Communications, raise grants and other resources from leading foundations, financial institutions, and other funders as well as increase visibility among key stakeholders to support HPN’s social innovation, enterprise development, and programmatic initiatives
  • In partnership with the VP, People & Culture, oversee people and cultural practices and objectives that will promote an employee-oriented culture that emphasizes quality, productivity, goal attainment, and the recruitment, retention, and ongoing development of a robust and diverse workforce that will support the current and future business needs of HPN. Operating at a high level in the emerging remote environment model will also be key
  • In partnership with the President and CEO and Senior Executive Associate and Board Liaison, oversee all HPN governance related activity, including but not limited to overseeing the planning, content, and development of the HPN Board of Directors meetings. Maintain positive and regular relationships with key board leaders and their support staff. 
  • Oversee the Senior Executive Associate in providing executive support to the CEO and the day-to-day administrative operations and logistical details of the chief executive office including effective scheduling and time management; preparation of briefing materials, ensure meeting readiness, and facilitating follow-up; assist with external relations and communications, and perform various administrative duties which may be intricate and confidential in nature.
  • In general, support HPN members and serve their interests, including but not limited to supporting, managing, and/or facilitating designated topics and communities of practice with members
  • As directed, lead and oversee critical projects from conception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with organizational goals, often through the coordination of cross-functional teams, set project milestones, and track progress against objectives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, representing the President and CEO as needed
  • In the CEO’s stead, act as a spokesperson or identify the subject matter expert to serve as a spokesperson for the organization, conveying key messages and representing HPN's interests with professionalism and integrity
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to direct reports, fostering professional growth and development within the organization.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, or related field; MBA or equivalent preferred.
  • Proven experience in a strategic leadership role, preferably as a Chief of Staff or equivalent, with a record of accomplishment of driving organizational success.
  • Experience working in affordable housing, lending and/or community development is a plus.
  • Board Experience in any capacity a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills; experience and possesses the knowledge to publicly represent the Network at high profile events and meetings with major public, private, and nonprofit partners.
  • Successful experience and comfort in working in organizations with cultures and internal practices that require a high degree of collaborative goal setting, achievement, and decision making.
  • Extensive experience working in organizations that blend a strong mission focus with deep business acumen and that operate in environments of uncertainty, ambiguity, and change. 
  • Strong business acumen and strategic thinking skills, with the aptitude to translate vision into actionable plans and measurable results.
  • Demonstrated project management expertise, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage timelines, and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion, with a commitment to upholding ethical standards and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and excellent skills in managing and developing senior professional staff. 

 

LOCATION

HPN is a remote-first company. “Remote-first” is an organizational strategy that makes working remotely the primary option for most staff. All new staff will be required to be onsite at HPN headquarters or in the Boston area multiple days during weeks designated as All-Staff weeks. There may be additional times when teams are required to travel by their leadership based on scheduled events, team meetings, and business needs.

 

COMPENSATION 

Salary: $260,000 (min)-$325,000 (mid). Commensurate with education and experience with a bonus potential.
