Boston Globe: Boston hits 1,000-unit mark for affordable units in 2015 - January 7, 2016

Thanks in part to the city’s building boom, Boston permitted more units of affordable housing in 2015 than in any year on record, Mayor Martin J. Walsh said Thursday.

The city issued building permits for 1,022 apartments and condos that are set at rents deemed affordable to middle and lower-income residents, topping Boston’s previous high of 862 in 2004 and the most in 20 years of record-keeping. Another 1,443 units were approved in 2015 but have not yet permitted.

“We are committed to creating a Boston that anyone, at any income level, can afford to live in,” Walsh said in a statement.
