50 Years Ago Today: In May 1967, CHAPA recommended the establishment of the DCA, later DHCD!

CHAPA’s attention in the early years focused on the need to reform state programs to address urban problems, which were not being created and implemented as rapidly as the urgency of the situation demanded.   In a May 1967 letter to Governor John Volpe, CHAPA’s Board recommended establishment of the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) as one solution to the problem. Legislation creating this cabinet level department was drafted by a CHAPA task force and enacted in July 1968; the DCA later became the Executive Office of Communities and Development (EOCD), and eventually the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).   Today, CHAPA is proud to celebrate 50 years of accomplishments as we continue to promote coordinated solutions to critical housing issues and homelessness across the state.   Save the date to join our special 50th Anniversary celebration on October 26 to keep moving our legacy forward.   We need your support and active participation to keep making a difference in Massachusetts!
