CELEBRATING CONNECTION
In these unprecedented times, CHAPA values connecting with each other more than ever. Though we are still socially distancing, we have and will continue to bring people together in the affordable housing and community development fields virtually. Please support CHAPA and join us for our first virtual Annual Dinner on October 21, 2020 at 7 PM to honor some of the amazing connections made and strengthened throughout the affordable housing community this year.
At this year's Dinner, we are pleased to celebrate the accomplishments of these affordable housing leaders, who are dedicated to ensuring that everyone has a safe, healthy, and affordable place to call home:
- Outstanding Impact: Jeanne Pinado, former CEO of Madison Park Development Corporation
- Emerging Leader: Jarred Johnson, Executive Director of TransitMatters
- Community Engagement: Engine 6 and Yes for Newton's Future

Outstanding Impact Award: Jeanne Pinado
Jeanne Pinado served as Madison Park Development Corporation’s CEO from 1998-2019 and is currently a Strategic Advisor for the organization. She developed and implemented a strategic growth plan that increased its multi-family and commercial real estate portfolio through new construction and acquisitions by over 300% since 2006 resulting in assets of $196 million. Her work has transformed the disadvantaged Roxbury neighborhood in Boston, created Hibernian Hall, a vibrant center of arts & culture and many other community programs focused on youth and resident leaders. Pinado currently serves as board President of NeighborWorks Capital Corporation, past president and current board member of CHAPA, executive board member of A Better City, member of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute Community Advisory Committee, and on the boards of Foley Hoag Foundation and Charlesbank Homes Foundation.
Emerging Leader Award: Jarred Johnson
Jarred Johnson is the Executive Director of TransitMatters. In his previous roles with the organization, Jarred has overseen the creation of an internship program, the launch of a successful follow-up to the Regional Rail report, and the development of the organization’s first strategic plan and equity plan. He comes to this position following service as Project Manager for the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation where he managed a variety of complex affordable housing real estate projects. His passion is exploring where transit and housing intersect with advocacy and organizing. Through working with low-income communities, he has come to understand just how important access to affordable housing, jobs, walkability, and sustainable transportation can be to making a community whole. Johnson serves on the Executive Committee of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council as a gubernatorial appointee and as a board member of Abundant Housing Massachusetts.
Community Engagement Award: Engine 6 and Yes for Newton's Future
Engine 6 is a group of advocates for fair, affordable, diverse, and abundant housing in Newton, formed in the summer of 2013 when a proposal for supportive housing for nine formerly homeless individuals was ultimately blocked by the city as a result of neighborhood opposition.
In close collaboration with partner groups, including Yes for Newton’s Future, Engine 6 successfully worked to educate voters about a referendum that would have overturned city council approval for Northland, a major mixed-use project with 140 affordable homes. The Yes for Newton’s Future campaign, chaired by Allison Sharma and working in tandem with Engine 6, worked to build a large and inclusive coalition to support the Northland project – affordable housing experts, climate activists, racial justice organizations, bike advocates, local clergy, current and former elected officials, business and economic development leaders, and more – all committed to bringing much-needed housing, environmental and economic benefits to Newton.
On March 3, 2020, Newton voters overwhelmingly affirmed the city council’s decision. Currently, Engine 6 is actively participating in a multi-year project to reform Newton’s zoning ordinance, aiming to reverse the historical elements that have resulted in racist and classist exclusion and to encourage multifamily housing near transit locations.
