A new report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) provides an in-depth portrait of the housing needs of veterans and how they vary among different groups of veterans and by state. Among other things, it found that over 1.5 million veteran households (out of 20 million) had severe cost burdens in 2011, paying more than 50% of their income on housing. The problem was most pronounced among extremely low income veteran households, where 70% had severe cost burdens. Extremely low income veterans who served after 9/11 and veterans with a service-related disability rating of 70% or higher were more likely to have severe affordability problems.
