Secretary Julián Castro will deliver a speech, 2015: The Year for Housing Opportunity, at the National Press Club today at noon. As part of his remarks, Secretary Castro will highlight the important role housing plays in our nation’s economy.
DHCD announces funding to municipalities to increase the supply of housing for a range of incomes by encouraging community-based planning activities that will lead directly to housing production.

STATE AWARDS $7.5 MILLION IN GRANTS FOR FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT TO INCREASE QUALITY IN EARLY EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Cambridge Housing Authority (CHA) announced that it has completed the conversion of its first 441 units of public housing to project-based assistance under HUD’s Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD). Compared to public housing, RAD provides a more stable and predictable funding platform and allows owners to leverage additional funding for capital improvements. Over the next twelve to eighteen months, all of CHA’s 2,129 public housing units will be converted to RAD which will trigger over $200 million in sorely needed construction at housing developments throughout Cambridge.
HUD’s FY2015 budget was finalized as part of an omnibus appropriations bill (H.R. 83) signed by the President on December 16, 2014.
As part of the commitment to preserving affordable housing units under the MRVP, DHCD is implementing rent increases to the Project-Based Voucher (PBV) portfolio.
Note: These rent increases do not apply to units funded under the 13A program with Mass Housing. DHCD is working with Owners of 13A units under a separate initiative.
